Football Friday

Progress! The last two weeks have not been anything too impressive, but I made money and that's the name of the game right? I'm feeling good right now. Maybe channeling my inner Costanza woke my gambling muscle up...orrrr maybe it's just a statistical fluke and I am doomed to regress to the mean (which apparently resides somewhere around 40% this year). Either way, all I can do is move forward with confidence and do what I can to appease the gambling Gods. I burned a Tim Donaghy effigy last week and today I'm planning on sacrificing some old BC basketball box scores. Hopefully this works. On to the picks!

Vanderbilt (+8.5) vs Florida
Lost in all the hoopla surrounding Florida's upset of LSU last week is the fact that both teams set offensive football back 50 years. Florida's offense is 92nd in the country in number of plays that gain more than 10 yards. Their defense is one of the best in the nation but they win games by gaining 4 yards at a time. 8.5 points is a lot when you're playing a team with only 5 plays in their playbook.

West Virginia @ Texas Tech OVER 77.5
After the crazy, logic-defying, "holy frickin' Moses two guys had 300 yards receiving" Baylor game, I've learned not to disrespect Geno. But this bet is as much about the Mountaineers' defense as it is about West Virginia's dynamite offense. Texas Tech can score with anyone. Look for both teams to be in the 40s at the very least.

Oregon State (+5.5) @ BYU
2 out of the last 3 weeks, BYU has failed to surpass the 7 point mark against Boise and Utah State. Oregon State has impressive wins at UCLA and at home against Wisconsin. The best team the fightin' Mormons have beaten this year is probably Utah State. How in the world are they favored by this much?

Texas (+3) vs Oklahoma
David Ash might be the best quarterback in this game. There's something wrong in Stillwater this year. Landry Jones was supposed to make his case to be the #1 overall pick and the Sooners were supposed to challenge for the BCS title. Instead, Jones is behind guys like Zac Dysert (Miami-OH) and Ryan Nassib (Syracuse) in quarterback rating and the Sooners already have one loss to Kansas State. And yes, I just found out that those people existed. I'm a full fledged sports nerd, but even I have my limits.

Miami (+8) vs North Carolina
Miami's offense is as good as their defense is bad. Over is probably a better bet in this game but I'm a fan of home dogs this week (if you couldn't already tell).

West Virginia (-4) @ Texas Tech
Geno Smith and company are like a hot craps table right now. Ain't time to leave yet.

Wisconsin (+2) @ Purdue
Purdue sucks. That is all.

On to the teasers

(7 point teaser)
West Virginia @ Texas Tech OVER 70.5, Baylor (-0.5) vs TCU
I have a gambling rule. If your team had to suspend your quarterback because he made Paris Hilton look like a normal, sober person, then you should avoid betting on them at all costs.

Casey Pachall is an inspiration to drunk athletes everywhere

(10 point teaser)
Northern Illinois (-4) vs Buffalo, Vanderbilt (+18.5), Oregon State (+15.5)
Buffalo should thank UMass for joining the MAC. Now they're only the 2nd most pathetic team in the division.

(6 point teaser)
Vanderbilt (+14.5), Notre Dame (-1) vs Stanford
Stanford beat USC at home and lost to Washington on the road. I think I see the picture starting to form on the Cardinal this year...

(6 point teaser)
Miami +14, South Carolina (+8.5) @ LSU
I can't see any way that South Carolina and LSU isn't a 1 score game. Both offenses suck and both defenses are dy-no-mite. LSU has played two SEC games this year and they were decided by 2 (@ Auburn) and 8 points (@ Florida).

(7 point teaser)
Texas (+10), Rutgers (-0.5) vs Syracuse
Syracuse is 87th in scoring offense, 63rd in scoring defense and they are 1-5 on the road in the last 2 years. I rest my case.

**Saturday Update**
Vanderbilt (+10) vs Florida
It tilts the crap out of me that I didn't get it at the best price. But now it's at the best price and given my stance on this game, I'd be crazy to not take it.

(7 point teaser)
Vanderbilt (+17), South Carolina (+10), Baylor (+0.5)
I've gotta make a move. This is it.

Tampa Bay (-4.5) vs Kansas City
So wait. You mean I get to wager against Brady Quinn on the road and I DON'T have to give up a touchdown? My birthday isn't for a few more weeks but thank you Vegas! This was so nice of you.

New England (-4) @ Seattle
Maybe I'm still in shock after the ass kicking the Broncos received last week but I just don't get how the Patriots are laying anything less than 6 against anyone other than Houston, Atlanta, Baltimore, Green Bay, or San Francisco. Brady's new hurry up offense is petrifying.

The emergence of this dude is what makes them so scary.
On to the teasers and parlays

(7 point teaser)
Denver (+8.5) @ San Diego, Atlanta (-2) vs Oakland
Call me a homer but I think that the Broncos are flat out better than the Chargers. And Atlanta vs Oakland? Well if that's not self-explanatory then you haven't watched any football this year.

(6 point teaser)
Pittsburgh (-1) @ Tennessee, Atlanta (-3)
God damn you Big Ben. Pittsburgh is so frickin' overrated.

(6 point teaser)
Buffalo (+10.5) @ Arizona, Saint Louis (+10) @ Miami
A fitting end to this week. I like points! Lots and lots of points! Buena suerte my fellow degens.

Last Week
College: 7-5
NFL: 4-2
