If you believe that the Broncos are a legitimate threat to San Diego and Oakland in the AFC West, then you have no choice but to play Orton. He is clearly the best quarterback on the team and gives the Broncos the best chance to win the game. Orton's problem is while he is an efficient quarterback between the 20s, when he gets inside the red zone or is backed up close to his own endzone he turns into a blubbering mess and makes Bronco fans long for the days of Brian Griese. Oh, and he also does this sometimes
If you think that the Broncos are closer to Andrew Luck than they are to 10-6, then you should obviously play Tebow right? Wrong. Every smart football guy says Tebow is not ready. It's laughable to them to even suggest it. In a pregame warmup in the preseason Tebow was apparently 5/10 on sideline throws while facing a grand total of zero defenders. Dallas' color commentator said "he had never seen a signal caller throw with less accuracy during pregame warmups than Tebow" (the story is here). Tebow is not ready. I like Tim Tebow and I refuse to bet against anyone with that kind of work ethic but the Broncos should play Brady Quinn.
Kyle Orton is a free agent at the end of the season and there is absolutely no chance he resigns in Denver. The Broncos are bad; I know it's hard to look Champ Bailey and Brian Dawkins in the eye and ask them to endure another rebuilding season but the Broncos don't have a choice. Champ and Dawkins are not going to win their first Super Bowls without a competent quarterback and the Broncos don't have one. Brady Quinn is going to be a free agent at the end of the year as well. Shouldn't the Broncos see what they have in Quinn before letting him walk? I've taken as many snaps for the Broncos as Brady Quinn so I would kind of like to know if the Broncos got anything for Peyton Hillis or if that was another Josh McDaniels special (to be fair, he did win the Cutler deal. Would you trade two 1st round picks, a 3rd round pick, and Kyle Orton for him now?).
The Broncos QB controversy boils down to this. Kyle Orton is OK, Tebow is not ready, and we're mostly sure but not 100% sure that Brady Quinn sucks. If you think the Broncos are division champs, you play the best guy. If they're anything else, you play Brady Quinn. But that's just my two cents, maybe if The Pollis blows up I'll purchase some billboard space in Denver to compete with the Tebowmaniacs.
