Well that was a disaster. Nothing like swearing to everyone how great you are then going out and proving your incompetence. Last week's 3-7 record was shameful, and it felt even worse considering that I went 1-7 on Saturday. All day, I was sitting in an Allston sports bar desperately trying to find the perfect amount of alcohol to consume that would make me forget this nightmare. Alas, I did not (with the help of my friends who enjoyed pointing out every excruciating moment) and now I return to you a humbled man with more bets for you, the reader. Just remember, even if I go 3-7 every week that means that I am still giving you games to bet (against me) and thus providing a utility. And isn't that what this is all about? Alright, let's do this. As always, games are sorted in descending order of confidence...Vamos!
Maryland -9 vs Temple
I know I loved Temple last week (and would like to point out that I did get that game right...which was my only correct pick on Saturday) but that was against a Penn St. team whose quarterback situation would be dramatically upgraded by JaMarcus Russell (the 315 lb purple drank machine, not the dude who lit up Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl). Temple matches up well with the plodding offenses of the Big 10 (Nebraska, Michigan, and Wiconsin notwithstanding) but they will struggle against Maryland's downfield passing attack. This one smells like an easy win for the Terps.
Vanderbilt +16 @ South Carolina
I like this line but I worry that I'm betting this game out of my frustration for the 'Ol Ball Coach. South Carolina has a talented defensive line, the best running back in the country in Marcus Lattimore (yes, I'm sticking to this assertion all year), and a top 4 wide receiver in the country (for the record, that list is Justin Blackmon, Alshon Jeffrey, Michael Floyd, and Al Toon) to pair with a competent quarterback in Stephen Garcia. If this team is a serious contender for SEC supremacy, then they should be beating Navy by more than 3 at home. Vandy is the forgotten child of the SEC. They are not a stranger to its challenges, especially this year's team. Vandy returns 21 starters (most in the country), and I expect them to keep this game close.
BYU -2 vs UCF
Yes, BYU got pounded last week by in state rival Utah. But this was also a game where Utah recovered 6 fumbles. That's not happening again. BYU played like garbage but their first two games (1 point win @ Ole Miss, 1 point loss @ Texas) tell me much more about this team than last week's debacle. I like BYU with a big bounce back game against a team that has to travel cross-country on a short week.
Ball State +4 vs Army
Make that two weeks in a row that I have bet against a service academy. I'm beginning to worry that my gambling problem is negatively affecting my patriotism. Whatever, as you are beginning to learn, I love home dogs. This feels like a field goal game so the home team with the points is a no-brainer.
North Carolina +6.5 @ Georgia Tech
Just knowing the two systems that these teams play, how can you look at this and not think it's a field goal game as well?
Washington -1.5 vs California
Keith Price won me over last week. He's mobile, poised, and doesn't get rattled easily. Oh, and he's from Compton. You seriously think that some kids from Berkley are going to intimidate this guy?
6 Point, 4 Team Tease (pays 3-1):
Utah State -3 vs Colorado State
Because CSU lost to CU, and Utah State almost won at Auburn.
San Jose State -3 vs New Mexico State
Because if it weren't for Akron, New Mexico State would be the worst team in college football.
Oklahoma State +10 @ Texas A&M
Because this is too easy.
Maryland -4 vs Temple
See Pick # 1.
Last week: 3-7
Season: 11-10-3
